Ohio Just Defeated an Extreme Abortion Ban, but Don't Get Too Comfortable | Jennifer Dalven

Ohio Just Defeated an Extreme Abortion Ban, but Don't Get Too Comfortable | Jennifer Dalven

Last week, the Ohio House voted on legislation that was breathtaking in its extremism: It would have banned all abortions after six weeks -- before many women even know they're pregnant.

First the good news: Legislators voted down the bill. That's a real and important victory for women in Ohio, and it does represent some progress. After all, the same legislation passed the House in 2011 before failing in the Senate.

But I'm just not able to get too excited about this. Yes, they defeated the ban, but celebrating the defeat of such an obviously terrible proposal is a hollow victory. While it's certainly good for the women of Ohio that the bill didn't advance, make no mistake about it: Extreme politicians remain fully committed to doing whatever they can to make sure that a woman can't get an abortion when she needs one.

After their failure in Ohio, and the crushing defeat of similar measures suffered on election night, they might change their approach.

But one thing you can be sure of: They haven't changed their goal.

Mississippi Says It Will Appeal Marriage Ruling As AFA Calls for Governor To Defy It| Gay News | Towleroad

Bryan Fischer is openly calling for the governor of Mississippi to violate the highest law of the land (the US Constitution). Federal courts are tasked with the delicate and thankless job of determining whether or not state statutes (and state constitutional amendments) and federal statutes comply with the US Constitution's requirements of due process and equal protection.

Hearts & Minds In MS

http://djournal.com/lifestyle/human-rights-campaign-seeks-change-hearts-minds-mississippi/

“Good luck with that,” said Tim Wildmon, president of the Tupelo-based American Family Association. “If they’re here trying to change people’s fundamental religious views, views they judge as wrong, I know people aren’t apt to change their conventional beliefs based on TV ads. Why target the South? The problems they’re claiming aren’t any more real in Mississippi than anywhere else.”

**********************************************************************************
By Riley Manning
Daily Journal
There’s a new effort gaining momentum in Mississippi aimed at changing the conversation about homosexuality.
Earlier this year, the Human Rights Campaign, a nationwide advocacy group for LGBT rights, compiled a massive survey to assess the experiences and priorities of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Mississippi.
Among their findings, they determined 57 percent of respondents have called Mississippi home for over 20 years. Around 10 percent are serving or have served in the armed forces. More than half claim they volunteer in their communities.
Perhaps even more notably, half of those surveyed said they are people of faith.
In the most religious state in the country, the HRC’s newest initiative precisely aims to soften the conversation around homosexuality among Mississippi’s church-goers.
“You can’t really have a conversation about mostly anything without also talking about faith,” said Rob Hill, director of the HRC’s Mississippi efforts. “Especially here, you cannot divorce faith from this conversation.”
‘All God’s Children’
Earlier this month, the HRC rolled out the first in a series of television ads to promote education about the experiences of LGBT Mississippians. The first commercial in the “All God’s Children” series features Southern Baptist mother Mary Jane Kennedy, who speaks on her son coming out as gay.
HILL
HILL
“[Kennedy] is a person of deep faith,” Hill said. “Because of her religious beliefs, her journey to acceptance was difficult, and that’s what people should hear. We want to offer hope.”
The next commercial appeared this week, and features state Rep. Alyce Clark, D-Jackson, the first black woman to serve in the Mississippi Legislature. She speaks about her own gay son.
Born in Greenwood and raised in Jackson, Blossom Brown is a transexual woman living in Columbus. She will also be the subject of an ad by the HRC.
“I think what a lot of people don’t understand is that the LGBT community really wants to be a part of the church community,” she said. “As a transgender woman, it’s hard to find a place where I can get that peace time with the Lord without being criticized, often to my face.”
The HRC has booted up similar campaigns in Arkansas and Alabama, but some are skeptical about their efforts.
[...] Tim  Wildmon comment moved to top of page. --ABratt
Hill differed with Wildmon. He said one-third of people from the HRC’s survey said they had been personally harassed by a person of authority, say an employer, or a police officer. In addition, members of the LGBT community can be fired and evicted for their sexual orientation.
“Even Mississippi’s hate crime laws don’t cover LGBT people, but in a poll we conducted last month, we found the majority of mainstream citizens thought these protections were actually in place,” he said.
What’s a church to do?
Bishop Clarence Parks, pastor of the Temple of Compassion and Deliverance in Tupelo, admitted the church in general has been afraid to talk about homosexuality in the past, and often when it was, it was in a vicious way.
“Because we weren’t used to it, we felt the need to be really harsh on it and put it out of our sight,” he said. “But it wasn’t out of our mind. As we go forth, we’re learning how to deal with the issue better, but at the end of the day, a sin is a sin.”
Bishop Kelvin Ransey, who pastors Spirit of Excellence Church in Oxford, agreed.
“People think the church hates gays, but that’s far from the truth. We love them, but acting in that way is not compatible with what we believe,” Ransey said.
The Rev. Jeffery Daniel, pastor of White Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Tupelo, said the church itself is being pulled in two extreme directions.
“As a minister, you should be able to stand on your convictions without being accused of preaching hate,” Daniel said. “At the same time, you can’t beat people over the head with scripture. I preach against homosexuality just like I do against gambling and fornication, but I do so while still being aware of the person.”
In general, though, he sees a growing cultural acceptance of the LGBT community from the younger generation simply from being exposed to it from a young age. While many churches may have handled the issue poorly, many who have handled it responsibly have still been vilified one way or another.
“More people are coming out as gay who are connected to people against it. That forces these people to change their stance,” Daniel said. “It’s wrong to belittle a person either way, but from our perspective, we want to love you out of it.”
The Rev. Warren Black, a United Methodist minister who pastored Oxford University United Methodist Church for 18 years before retiring this year, says he hopes the church doesn’t land on the wrong side of history or the gospel. In his eyes, the more time the church wastes not accepting the LGBT community, the more young lives are at risk.
“The reality is people need help. Confusion over sexual orientation is one of the leading causes of teen suicide. These kids have nowhere to turn, and to me, that should be a ministry of the church,” Black said. “Meanwhile, more and more of the younger generation are leaving the church.”
Middle ground
Parks, Ransey, Black, and Hill did all agree that LGBT Mississippians should be protected under the law.
“Nobody should be fired for no reason, and I definitely don’t think it should be OK to go out and beat someone up or anything like that,” Parks said. “But there are civil rights and kingdom rights. I’m all for the LGBT community having civil rights. But marriage in the church is a kingdom right.”
Hill took heart in this attitude. The most he hopes for at this point, he said, is for the church community to hear the LGBT community out.
“We don’t want to fight. We want to be able to sit down and talk,” Hill said. “We hope that if we change people’s hearts and minds, that can lead to policy change.”
Black was optimistic, too.
“I greatly admire the HRC. I think things are really starting to move down here,” he said.
The HRC will make an appearance in Oxford at the Egg Bowl next weekend. Hill said they will have an information booth set up outside of Lamar Hall.

Republican [Joni Ernst] Admits Why Republicans Hate Obama Care

Republican Admits Why Republicans Hate Obamacare -- NYMag

Jonathan Chait:
"Conservatives have made a series of specific predictions about the effects of Obama Care — overall costs would rise, insurers would flee the exchanges, premiums would go up, the ranks of the uninsured would not even fall. All these predictions have failed. And yet conservative opposition to the law has not diminished. If you want to know why this is, listen to these secretly recorded comments from Iowa Republican Senate candidate Joni Ernst, via Radio Iowa and Greg Sargent. Here Ernst, speaking candidly to supporters, gets to the root of conservative opposition":
     http://abrattsliberaltupeloms.blogspot.com/2014/11/republican-joni-ernst-admits-why.html
Ernst:
We’re looking at Obama care right now. Once we start with those benefits in January, how are we going to get people off of those? It’s exponentially harder to remove people once they have already been on those programs…we rely on government for absolutely everything.  And in the years since I was a small girl up until now into my adulthood with children of my own, we have lost a reliance on not only our own families, but so much of what our churches and private organizations used to do. They used to have wonderful food pantries. They used to provide clothing for those that really needed it. But we have gotten away from that. Now we’re at a point where the government will just give away anything.”

That’s the fundamental belief that motivates most, if not all, the conservative opposition: Health care should be a privilege rather than a right. If you can’t afford health insurance on your own, that is not the government’s problem.
I happen to find this belief morally bizarre. People who cannot afford their own insurance either don’t earn much money, or have health risks, or family members with health risks, too expensive to bear.
All of us non-socialists would agree that there ought to be some things rich people get to enjoy that poor people are deprived of. Access to health care is a strange choice of things to deprive the losers of — not least because one of the things you do to “earn” the ability to afford it is not just the normal market value of earning or inheriting a good income, but the usually random value of avoiding serious illness or accident.
Indeed, very few Republicans have the confidence to make the case openly that the inability of some people to afford the cost of their own medical care is their own problem. But that is the belief that sets them apart from major conservative parties across the world, and it is the belief that explains why they have opposed national health insurance every time Democrats have held power, and why they have neglected to create national health insurance every time they have."

Tupelo's AFA (Dark Side) Clueless Or Dishonest About Net-Neutrality

"Religious Right Activists Either Clueless Or Dishonest  About Net Neutrality"
Brian Tashman, Right Wing Watch,11-12-14.

RWW: "This week, spokesmen for the American Family Association and National Religious Broadcasters, two of the country’s top Religious Right groups, came out strongly against net neutrality, while simultaneously demonstrating that they have no idea what net neutrality actually is. Yesterday, both groups weighed in again, as NRB’s Craig Parshall spoke with Dan Celia of the AFA, both of them completely misrepresenting net neutrality as a threat to freedom."--Article from Right Wing Watch re-posted by Al Bratton to ABratts Liberal Tupelo MS Blog

So This Is Christianity American Style? -AB

"Conservative religious leaders have a long track record of hyping supposed threats to religious liberty in America  specifically, to the religious liberty of conservative Christians. In fact, portraying Christians as a persecuted minority under siege by anti-freedom LGBT activists and secular humanists has become the right's primary strategy for reversing the advance of equality in America. But even in the long context of crying wolf over threats to religious freedom, Sen. Ted Cruz and his religious right allies have set new records for dishonest hype in their response to this week's controversy over subpoenas sent to a few religious leaders in Houston."

BarbWire: Miss America Winner Contributes To Violence, Destruction of The Country | Right Wing Watch

BarbWire columnist Luke Douglas is joining other conservatives who have expressed outrage that Kira Kazantsev, the recently-crowned Miss America, once worked as an education intern at a Long Island Planned Parenthood clinic.
*******************************************************************************************************************************
So, now I invite you to take a first-hand look at what some in America's Christian-Right minority think is Christianity marching on to save the world!--ABratt

“The crusader of the largest abortion provider in the nation now the face of America? We shouldn’t be surprised,” Douglas said, before arguing that Planned Parenthood has contributed to the “pernicious deterioration” of America, with increased cases of rape and murder, as “a sexual revolution begun in the name of liberty has brought us to violence and confusion.”
This week’s newly crowned Miss America, 2015 is said to represent everything America believes in. Kira Kazantsev rose through the ranks of the competition: first as Miss New York, then singing “Happy” to win the national crown, then to represent our identity, our values, and our future as Miss America. As the crowds cheered with joy at her achievements, America took heart in knowing that our future is in the able hands of a new [...]

Spotlighting: Christian Right Homophobes Tim Wildmon, Bryan Fischer, Scott Lively...

AFA's Tim Wildmon, Scott Lively, Peter LA Barbera [...] Launch Global anti-Gay 'Coalition for Family Values.'  Yes, Friends, That's What They Named It!

http://religiondispatches.org/global-lgbt-recap-ugandan-law-unleashes-vigilantes-anti-gay-americans-want-to-boost-homophobia-exports/

'USA: Anti-Gay Religious Activists Hope to Boost Homophobia Exports'
"Anti-gay activists Scott Lively and Peter LaBarbera launched a new global anti-gay network they call the Coalition for Family Values.  At a Washington, D.C. press conference, Lively said governments have an affirmative duty to uphold a biblical view of sexuality, which he called the “one flesh paradigm.” That means discouraging and suppressing homosexuality.
Lively’s new effort has  drawn quick support from other religious right leaders like Liberty Counsel’s Matt Barber and The American Family Association’s Tim Wildmon and Bryan Fischer.
Like the World Congress of Families at its recent press conference, Lively and his partners praised Russia’s anti-gay laws and encouraged the rest of the world to follow suit. From my report on the event at Right Wing Watch:"
Lively, who played an active role in fomenting homophobia in Uganda, now claims he thinks the new law there is too harsh. His goal is not to put people in jail, he says, as long as they keep their sex behind closed doors and don’t try to change society. He says government has “an affirmative duty” to discourage all sex outside marriage and to encourage the biblical “one flesh paradigm” regarind sexuality.
 The coalition’s statement says:
“…the vast majority of the people of the world do not accept the notion that sexual deviance should be normalized. It is time that these voices are heard on the world stage before the so-called elites of the Western powers impose their inverted morality on everyone through the manipulation of international law, which they clearly intend to do.”
Lively said his new group is needed because too many religious conservatives are afraid to really speak their minds on homosexuality.
“We believe that the pro-family movement is not being well represented at the moment. Because most of the people that are in the leadership positions are afraid to speak the plain truth because of the media….We’re not against gay marriage and gay adoption because they’re just bad public policy.

'We’re against them because homosexuality itself is harmful to the people who practice it and to society. ['same old song & dance from America's own Taliban Community'!]--ABratt

"Robin Williams Rest IN Peace Make God Laugh" Sarcasm, AFA/Fischer Image From One News Now

"The World Famous Laugh Factory" Taken From American Family Associations' One News Now Web Site  promoted by Bryan Fischer and the Anti-human rights activist Tim Wildmon, 8-21-14.

Robin Williams' suicide, as is every suicide, is a tragically sad thing. My heart hurts to think what Williams' inner life must have been like at the end to drive him to such a terrible decision. My heart aches for those he has left behind – his wife, his children, loved ones and friends. His death has left a hole in their lives that nothing and no one can fill.
RIP Robin WilliamsIn the wake of his suicide, billboards and media pundits alike have been assuming that Robin Williams is now in heaven, making God laugh along with other funny men who left this earth before their time. So is he?
There is one thing we do know and one thing we do not know that can help us think clearly about Robin Williams' eternal destiny....

KKK Anti-Immigration Rally Drowned Out By Counterprotesters

KKK Anti-Immigration Rally Drowned Out By Counterprotesters

A KKK anti-immigration protest in North Carolina was drowned out by several hundred counterprotesters, sending a message that the group's recent foray into the immigration reform battle may not be going as planned.
Between 400 and 500 community members and immigration reform advocates organized a counterprotest across the street from the approximately 100 KKK members in Troy, North Carolina, on Saturday, as reported by the Asheboro Courier-Tribune. The KKK had expected 200 of its members to show up, according to its protest permit.
The counterprotesters told local news outlets that they wanted to send the message that the KKK's extremist rhetoric is not welcome. The protest, originally planned as a rally for the Klansmen to publicize their new "shoot-to-kill" border security policy, became a shouting match between the Klansmen and the counterprotesters.
"Don't come back to Troy, boy!" community members shouted.
"Young people today will not stand for this. When I was a little boy, the KKK coming to town would have put fear in my heart, but not anymore," local resident Donald Loften told the Courier-Tribune. "This country has come so far since those days. Where I work, we all work together every day. It’s a shame and disgrace for society that this hatred can go on, but I guess there will always be that 10 percent who want to hate somebody. They want to stir up trouble, but they are dealing with a different mentality now. People have no fear of them."
“I have always wanted to talk trash to a grand dragon. It felt good,” said community member Jack Cagle.
The protest is part of the hate group's recent efforts to include anti-immigration positions in its mission. Though the group has long advocated for white supremacy and racial intolerance, experts say that the group wants to capitalize on the recent border crisis. Saturday's protest was one of several events set to be held this summer.
The group appears to be losing support, even in its Southern strongholds. According to the Christian Science Monitor, the number of KKK members nationwide has declined to about 6,000. During the civil rights movement in the 1960s, it had nearly 60,000.

Spotlighting AFA Dark side Of Tupelo, MS.

Spotlighting The Rushdoony AFA Dark Side Of Tupelo, MS,

By Al Bratton Tupelo, Aug. 4, 2014, (323 words),

Source Material From Right Wing Watch
"The American Family Association today is promoting  a 2013 article by research director Ed Vitagliano, who warns that the rise of gay rights in the U.S. 'is a sign of a deep spiritual sickness' and 'a downward death spiral' that will incite divine wrath."
“'[H]omosexuality often becomes the barometer of a culture rotting out from the inside,' Vitagliano writes, lamenting that '[s]traight[ America has embraced homosexuality because straight Americans first embraced the sexual revolution for the satisfaction of their own perverse sexual appetites.'”]
He concludes that pushing gays 'back into the closet (if that were possible)' is not 'enough to forestall judgment,' but that conservatives must go even further in driving out the 'underlying wickedness that permeated the entire culture.”'
"It is sometimes difficult for Christians to comprehend the breathtaking speed with which the gay movement has succeeded in America. While the political movement itself began in 1969, it has only been over the last decade that homosexual activists have seen virtually every one of their dreams come true."

"Yet Scripture is clear that embracing homosexuality is a sign of a deep spiritual sickness. In particular, three important passages warn cultures about taking this step."

"How can a reasonable person do this? How can a society clearly see that humanity is divided into male and female genders, with corresponding, rather than identical, genitalia, and shrug its collective shoulders"?

"Romans 1:18 states that this is done because they' suppress the truth in unrighteousness.'” The Greeks did this. America is on the verge of doing so.

"A downward death spiral results from such suppression. These individuals (and, we must assume, the cultures such individuals create) sink into further darkness and eventually (unless God intervenes) become hardened and blinded to the truth."

"In Jude 7 the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah is made even more explicit: The inhabitants 'indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh,' and what could be stranger than men fornicating with other men?)"

"But the Genesis account takes note of the utter depravity of these particular homosexual men, for it was the violence of their predatory behavior that seems most abhorrent in the passage. They literally threatened to have forcible homosexual intercourse with Lot’s visitors – i.e., to rape his guests." (323)

Tupelo's  "'Dark Side 'American Family Association Hostile to Child Migrants" (OverBlown Fears About Disease...)--AB

"On her American Family Radio program this morning, Sandy Rios [a self-proclaimed Christian] joined fellow anti-immigrant activists in spreading overblown fears about diseases being carried by the Central American refugees at the southern border."
"Rios suggested that the child refugees should be quarantined like lepers used to be. 'I think of biblical times, the lepers were separated — right or wrong — they were separated,' she said. 'It was understood that leprosy was so contagious. So there’s nothing wrong with wanting to separate your children. We used to quarantine people when they had diseases'”
“'We’re such a healthy people that we’ve forgotten what it’s like to be diseased and die from those diseases in huge numbers,” she said, “but we’re going to learn, I think, again.'”
She went on to lament that the children are being transported in the 'same planes that you and I fly in.'”
“'How do we know about lice and disease before they get on public transportation?'” she added.

Tim Wilmon Daily Journal Letter: Political Correctness Undermines Values...

Tim Wildmon Daily Journal Letter: Political Correctness Undermines Values...

    http://djournal.com/opinion/tim-wildmon-political-correctness-undermines-values-patriotism/

Human Rights Violator, Bigot, and  AFA  President Tim Wildmon, representing The “Dark Side” Of Tupelo, MS, decided on July 27, 2014, he had every reason to slam Gay Football Star Michael Sam in his personal column because, for one reason, he Is allowed to do his little “dirty hate work” through the Tupelo Mississippi Daily Journal uncensored and supported by the Editor of course, and others.
    Wildmon’s post is as follows:
“The politically correct or ‘progressive’ crowd found a new target this week. When asked about ‘[Out and Proud]’ football player Michael Sam, former NFL coach Tony Dungy said he would not have drafted Sam had he still been coaching. Said Dungy: “I wouldn’t have [drafted] him. Not because I don’t believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play, but I wouldn’t want to deal with all of it. It’s not going to be totally smooth … things will happen.”
“‘For this comment, ESPN commentator Keith Olbermann named Dungy the ‘Worst Person in the World’ on Monday night. Condemnations of Dungy came from all over.’”
“This is where the ‘progressive’ movement is. If you hold a view that is not in agreement with theirs, you are to be demonized by them, the progressives, who, ironically, don’t believe in demons. Why do they do this? It’s because they, the progressives, consider themselves morally superior to [ “those of us who hold traditional values “Is Bigotry aimed at your fellow man, Wildmon, because he has a different sexual lifestyle than you, against ‘traditional values’ or are your ‘traditional values’  a national scam? ] “even though, again, ironically, progressives don’t believe in moral values unless they define them. They moralize against those who promote morality.” [And of course, you,Tim are a ,promoter, of morality’ and a pure hypocrite to boot].
“The progressive movement is out to destroy our country as it has existed. It is against patriotism. It is against religion in general and is in particular hostile to evangelical Christianity and traditional Catholicism. It is against borders. It is against capitalism. It is for high taxation and government control and regulation of almost everything. It wants people depending on government so they can be controlled. It believes government debt is good. It is against our Bill of Rights, in particular the First and Second Amendments. It is for abortion on demand even through nine months of pregnancy. It wants to downgrade the American military. It rejects the idea that Western Civilization is superior to other civilizations. And it most certainly is for promoting the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender movement and punishing people who dare speak against it. Basically, what I have just described is the platform of the modern day Democratic Party and the philosophy/agenda of much of the New York/Washington, D.C., liberal media, Hollywood and most university campuses. When Barack Obama said he wanted to ‘fundamentally transform’ America, what he was saying to his fellow hardcore progressives was: ‘I’ve got the wrecking-ball ready.’”
“Sexually, God made man for woman and woman for man. It’s obvious. It’s natural. Progressives can’t stand this. So they are always trying to equate homosexuality with heterosexuality or elevate homosexuality over [above] heterosexuality. When someone like Dungy makes a comment that can in any way been seen as challenging this narrative then that person must be immediately discredited or publicly shamed no matter the truth of what he is saying.”
[ Wildmon forgot to mention the fact that God also made lesbian/gay women for lesbian/ gay women. If he doesn’t believe that, how can he  possibly believe God made him to be the only true straight man on earth--the other Adam yet to be mentioned in the Biblical Scriptures. As for Tony Dungy, Wildmon has no idea what he was really trying to say about Michael Sams, he decided he would offer-up his opinion, regardless, and in the Tupelo Mississipppi Daily Journal where fact checking is unknown when it comes to their Pious & Good Community Columnist, Tim Wildmon!]
Wildmon: “By the way, having been a sports reporter for a few years I’ve been in many football locker rooms where the players walk around naked or half-naked, changing clothes and going in and out of the showers. Putting a man like Sam, who says he is sexually attracted to men, in with all that “beefcake” [a common gay term used to describe sexually attractive macho men and boys]  seems unfair to the straight players and a distraction to Sam. Would you put a heterosexual man in the locker room/showers with all the female cheerleaders? Would you tell the girl cheerleaders who objected to this man being in the locker room that they needed to end their bigoted and sexist attitude and treat the man with respect?
[You would need to ask the female cheerleaders that question, don’t you think, Pious Tim.]
“Tony Dungy will probably survive being the ‘worst person in the world.’ But the fact that he is in the crosshairs of the PC Gestapo over this comment is chilling to free speech and free thinking. It’s ironic that the people who now scream the loudest about tolerance have become the least tolerant among us.”--Tim Wildmon. 7-27-14. (885 +- words)
